What is a commercial invoice?

A commercial invoice is the primary customs document in an international shipment — it states what is being sold, to whom, for how much, and on what trade terms. Customs authorities use it to assess duties and taxes, so the values, HS codes and Incoterms must be accurate.

What a commercial invoice includes

  • Seller & buyer (name, address, tax ID)
  • Invoice number & date
  • Line items — description, HS code, quantity, unit price, amount
  • Incoterms® 2020 + named place
  • Currency, total amount & amount in words
  • Country of origin & shipping marks

Already have one as a PDF, scan or spreadsheet?

Frequently asked

What is the difference between a commercial invoice and a proforma invoice?
A proforma invoice is a quote issued before the sale is confirmed; a commercial invoice is the final bill issued once goods ship and is the document customs clears against.
Do I need HS codes on a commercial invoice?
Most customs authorities expect an HS (tariff) code per line item to classify the goods and assess duty. It is strongly recommended and often required.
